IS THE NPP NOW FISHING FOR EVIDENCE AGAINST AFOKO?

It has been three weeks since Paul Afoko , a leading contender in the NPP Chairmanship race met with the vetting committee where he was confronted with a anonymous petition that accused him of a criminal conviction in the United Kingdom.

The committee will neither show him the petition nor tell him the author, but went on to ask questions in relation to the claims of the unknown petitioner.

In the process, the committee ‘forced’ Afoko to supply them with his London address so they will begin their investigations.

Three weeks down the line we are now hearing that the NPP is waiting for a report from Interpol over Paul Afoko. Is the Interpol going to supply information about the alleged criminal conviction in the UK, or are they simply pair-trawling for any kind of dirt to hit Afoko with?

The institution with the records of all criminal convictions in the UK is the Crowns Prosecutions Service and they can even be contacted via the internet to supply the answers. It is curious that the NPP is taking this long to settle a simple matter or is it a gimmick to slow Afoko down while the other contenders are in the field?

One would have thought that the petitioner should have been made to accompany his or her petition with some basic evidence of the year of imprisonment, the court that convicted Afoko and the name of the presiding Judge in that matter but none of these was supplied.

A leading member of the NPP, Mr. Gabby Octhere Darko had this to say about the petition and the conduct of the vetting committee on his facebook wall: “So the NPP accepts petitions of allegations without supporting evidence from faceless strangers about their own leading members? Ghanaian women being forced into prostitution in Middle Eastern countries The United States government says Ghanaian women are being forced into prostitution and forced labour in foreign countries, particularly in the Middle East. According to the US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report 2013, Ghanaian women migrating to the Middle East to work are forced into prostitution upon their arrival. The report attributed the phenomenon to the, emergence of fraudulent recruitment agencies that advertised locally for jobs abroad, generally in the domestic service and retail sectors. Ghanaian women and children are recruited and transported to Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, The Gambia, South Africa, Israel, Syria, Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Russia, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States for forced labour and prostitution,” it said. The report also revealed that women and girls voluntarily migrating from China, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, and Benin are subjected to commercial sexual exploitation after arriving in Ghana. It noted that citizens from other West African countries are subjected to forced labour in Ghana in agriculture or domestic service. “Ghana is a country of origin, transit, and destination for men, women, and children subjected to forced labour and sex trafficking,” it stated. The report said the trafficking of Ghanaians, particularly children, within the country is more prevalent than the transnational trafficking of foreign migrants. “Ghanaian boys and girls are subjected to conditions’ of forced labour within the country in fishing, domestic service, street hawking, begging, portering, artisanal gold mining, and agriculture. Ghanaian girls, and to a lesser extent boys, are subjected to prostitution within Ghana,” it added. According to the report, child prostitution, and possibly child sex tourism, is prevalent in the Volta Region and is growing in the oil-producing Western Region. The report said during the reporting period, the government initiated 75 trafficking investigations and secured three convictions and this demonstrates a significant decrease from the previous reporting period, when the government initiated 91 investigations and convicted 29 traffickers. It noted that all three offenders were convicted for sex trafficking offenses; two received five-year prison sentences and one received a seven-year sentence. The report indicted the Government of Ghana of not fully complying with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it is making significant efforts to do so. The government also drafted a new five-year national action plan and continued to conduct information and education campaigns throughout the country. At the close of the reporting period, two prosecutions and 42 investigations remained pending. In October 2012, the Government of Ghana collaborated with the Government of Burkina Faso in an INTERPOL-led operation, which resulted in the rescue of 387 child trafficking victims from various West African nations subjected to forced labour in gold mines and cotton fields in Burkina Faso; the Ghanaian Police sent 16 officers to participate in the operation and assisted in 30 arrests. During November and December 2012, the government began an operation against sex trafficking in close co-operation with the Government of Nigeria’s National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP); as a result of this operation, authorities rescued 82 Nigerian and 41 Ghanaian victims and apprehended 10 Nigerian and six Ghanaian suspected trafficking of-fenders. As a result of these investigative efforts, five prosecutions were completed during the reporting period; one additional case is pending. The report recommended to government to increase efforts to investigate and prosecute trafficking offenses, convict and punish trafficking offenders to ensure that the police’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) discharges its duties effectively. KNUST lecturer turns plastic waste to fuel

Plastic waste has been a global menace and an issue for discussion at various conferences, seminars and platforms both locally and international. In a bid to contribute their knowledge to solve the plastic waste menace whilst generating revenue alongside, Mr. Michael Commeh, of the Technology Consultancy Centre (TCC) of the College of Engineering (CoE) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has developed a new technology that can convert waste plastic into fuel.
Mr. Commeh together with Isaiah Nimako and Nene Amoatey, Researchers at Applied Industrial Ceramics and Rural Energy and Enterprise Development Unit (AIC-REED) of the TCC of KNUST used “Reverse Function theory” and “Thermal Decomposition approach” to develop the technology.
Over the past year, they have developed a setup that can under stated conditions convert waste plastics both (Low Density Polyethylene LDPE and High Density Polyethylene HDPE) to fuel. The fuel can either be petrol, aviation fuel or diesel which they say is their focus for now.
The proposed “MIN fuel” currently runs on a petrol engine. The American standard test also proved that it can be used to run any diesel or petrol engine as well as form an excellent blend (admix) with petrol of low octane number, as proved by their test.
The team believes the technology can be applied to e-waste to turn its plastic to fuel as well as retrieve gold, platinum, copper etc. from electronic waste.
 The fuel is the best for exhaust, better than the normal fuel on the Ghanaian market, environmentally friendly, a good mix for all fuels and has higher performance.  It is also safe and meets all the standards of the Ghana Standards Authority when it was tested by them.
In an exclusive interview with the University Relations Office (URO) Mr. Commeh revealed that the fundamental aim of the project is to make use of limited resources to advance technology. He said irrespective of limited resources it did not take place in a developed country but Ghana, which is a great achievement as a developing country.
He indicated that as global sister universities are doing, it would be good if the University would adopt the project to improve the image and the global ranking of the University.
He said in Ghana alone, about 200,000 tons of waste are generated every day with close to 60 per cent made up of plastics and therefore “the research team sees waste as ‘money in transition’ and took the challenge in converting it to fuel, and plastic is one of them among others.”
Mr. Michael Commeh solely financed this project with his research allowance, but
looks forward to setting up various plants throughout the country and called on donors, collaborators and investors to partner them to contribute their knowledge to solve the plastic waste menace whilst generating revenue alongside.
The Student Representative Council (SRC) of KNUST has shown interest and promised a thirty thousand Ghana Cedi (GH¢30, 000.00) support for scaling up to two barrel a day production.

Hahahahahah Tony aidoo says mahama is a failure

Ambassador-designate, Dr. Tony Aidoo says government has criticised his own administration, accusing it for failing to live up to its responsibilities of making life less onerous for the Ghanaian. According to him, the government has flunked in taking decisive steps to plug the leakages in the system, particularly at the revenue mobilisation points, which tend to cause the masses to suffer. Dr. Aidoo, who is the out-going Head of Policy Monitoring and Evaluation at Office of the President on Wednesday stated on the Joy FM that, "government must backup" and stop giving excuses for the inability to deliver what it promised Ghanaians. "There is strong material evidence that a great deal of leakages go on in there [Ghana Revenue Authority]; an official from the VAT [Value Added Tax] will go and connive with a "vated entity" most of the time to reduce the liability...There is a conspiracy that has been going on for a very long time". "And to the extent that this goes on...government has failed Ghanaians," he stated. "You have no excuse to fail! "Don't tell me that you came to power without realising the huge responsibilities that you are going to incur when you are voted into power. However onerous the responsibility of governance, it must be done and you have to do it in a way and manner that balance resources and your outgoings." Tony Aidoo Agenda Dr. Tony Aidoo also dismissed the notion by some of his colleagues in government to the extent that, his persistent criticism of the government regarding the seemingly poor economic management, is solely intended to serve his interest. "I am not pursing a Tony Aidoo Agenda," he stressed. He encouraged the public to be bold and speak out when public resources are not being managed properly by the government. "As a citizen of this country who has worked in public service all my life; left a comfortable establishment; prospective work in Jamaica and Bristol to came back to Ghana, I believe that I have a duty to act in the public interest. "The economy is not working well; we should say so. We should not be hypocrites and sycophants and pretend that everything is working well," he said.

AFISA OTIKU DJABA,THE FACE OF HOPE FOR ALL WOMEN IN THE NPP

We need a virtuous woman like AFISA OTIKU DJABA to continue inspiring our ladies nd women like she had always done, so that together we can wrestle power from the ndc.I donot throw my support blindly so after a careful examination of her activities as the sitting national women's organiser of our party,i have no doubt whatsoever that this woman is the rightful person to be maintained as the national women's organiser of our party.As the current national women's organiser Afisa Otiku Djaba has a list of tremendous achievements under her carpet that she can proudly boast of. Firstly,our current national women's organiser was able to form the Women's wing working committee,an association within our party which has brought together all past and present women of stature including former and sitting  mps,d.c.e's and ministers of state so that they can empower the upcoming young women in our party.This feet she has achieved at the national level and hopes to replicate in all the regions and down to the constituency levels if re-elected. Secondly, she formed the "girls girls initiative programme" , a group which later became "girls girls for Nana Addo"to help empower young women,most of whom were in the zongo's,kayaye on our streets and unemployed young women,disabled women in our communities and trained most of them in apprenticeships.Most of them are now seamstresses,hairdressers etc etc.As an affectionate mother of four and someone who had worked in rural areas during her working days with Plan Ghana, an international non governmental organisation,she personally empowered many women in our party by funding them to learn how to produce beads and batik.Eventhough it is said that it is difficult to raise money to party activities in opposition,Afisa Otiku Djaba had shown that indeed with the right heart,spirit and bargaining accuemen ,one could easily do so to better the lives of their people.Thirdly,our current national women organiser has helped to create a national women's wing membership cards for the women in the N.P.P with a monthly fee of 1 ghc being paid to improve the welfare of our women.This initiative will also be replicated nationally in her second term of office as she told me in an interview earlier on.She was also the brain behind the organisation of annual "salafest" festivities for over 2000 kayaye in our party during their islamic festivities by feeding them and showering them with gifts.As the national women organiser,Otiku Afisa Djaba organised periodic prayer sessions for our party during the electioneering period and even during the supreme court petition.She has indeed proven beyond reasonnable doubt that she is someone we can trust and count on as a our national women's organiser for another four years.Otiku Afisa Djaba also was all over radio stations like Adom fm,Peace fm and on television stations like Metro tv and others defending the cause of our great party,even at the peril of her personal security.Indeed our national women's organiser has brought respect and a much prefered public outlook to all the women in our party by elevating their stature in ghanaian contemporary body politics.Her good communication skills and her ability to speak almost eight local diallects including gonja,wale,hausa,dagbani,twi,ga,fante and krobo makes her the needed gap to bridge the parity between the north and other parts of the country when it comes to mobilising support for the NPP at the grass roots.I will therefore plesd with all delegates to think of the future of our women,children and upcoming female politician aspirants in our great party by retaining madam AFISA OTIKU DJABA as our national women's organiser of the NPP because she is the FACE OF HOPE for our women.The lies and negative propaganda about her should be treated with outermostly grave contempt because it is only political neophytes and potential losers who adopt such weird and unreasonnable tactic against their own party members during internal party contests.OTIKU stands tall.Long live the national women's wing of the NPP,long live NPP,long live Ghana.......by Don paino

SINKING JAKE IS CLUTCHING AT STRAW

A sinking man they say will clutch at anything to stay afloat. That appears to be the situation facing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) incumbent National Chairman Jake Otanka Obetshebi Lamptey.  He has suddenly found a harmless suggestion from Paul Afoko as his saving straw to latch at.

Apart from Kennedy Agyapong’s open campaign against Jake and the rest of the current National Executives, there is a ground swell at the polling station and constituency levels against these executives particularly against Jake, Sir John and Fred Oware. Supporters of the party believe that these executives are responsible for the party’s defeat in the 2012 elections and have therefore vowed to show them the exit in the upcoming elections for national officers.

However like most power drunken African Politicians, Jake and his colleagues cannot see the shame that is coming and insist on pursuing their parochial and selfish interest of holding on to power at all cost. They are the ones who have been registering members of the party and issuing them with party cards that make them eligible to vote.(Interestingly, with their own private machines).

It is Jake and his colleagues who have been going round inaugurating the international branches of the NPP and psyching them up for the upcoming national elections. Jake and his colleagues set up the timetable and drew the ground rules for the elections. INDEED IT IS JAKE, WHO APPOINTED THE DIRECTOR FOR ELECTIONS OF THE PARTY, ONE MARTIN ADJEI MENSAH, who serves as SECRETARY to a National Elections Committee of the Party.

And so when recently one of the aspirants to the National Chairmanship position Paul Afoko raised a very legitimate moral question about National Executives being Judges, Jury and Executioners in their own court, Jake found the straw he had been waiting for; he quickly latched at it and has made it the centre of his campaign. He even had the audacity to call on people to “learn the party’s constitution if they want to lead the party.”

Nobody has called for a constitutional amendment. And that clearly was not Paul Afoko’s call. Paul simply raised a moral question and any body with any iota of morality and a sense of shame cannot fail to see that National Executives who are standing for re-elections cannot and should not be allowed to play any active roles in the run-up to these national elections. It is as simple as that. But off course Jake and his colleagues have been blinded by their selfish interests. Jake and his team should concern themselves with the calls on them to render an account of their stewardship before they ask party supporters to re-elect them. These are the more crucial issues that should concern them and not who is learning or not learning the Party’s constitution. By the way, if Jake understood the NPP’s Constitution then he would have known that National Officers are elected at a National Delegates Conference and nothing else. Maybe Jake is the one to learn the constitution.
